As compared to colored dreams, fewer people reported dreaming in black and white. There are several notions as to why some people dream only in pure black and white whereas others remembered just a handful of instances.
A large portion of people who dream in black and white belongs to the older generation who was exposed to the earliest version of mass media in television which are black and white. This points out that past memory have a strong implication to one's recent dream state.
Another reason for black and white dream is caused by the dreamer lacking emotion about the events or objects unfolding in their dreams.
