Can people with antibodies transmit covid-19?
@healthbiztips by Arlene Gentallan | Health blog
As of writing this blog post, September 2020, there is no scientific evidence to back-up the claim that people who have active antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019), will not be able to infect other people.
To start with, the presence of antibodies against coronavirus in the blood steam is not a reliable indicator of an active covid-19 infection. This is owing to the fact that it takes time for the body to create these antibodies. Typically, people who contract covid-19 develop antibodies after about 1 to 3 weeks and by the time that antibodies are detected in a person’s blood steam, the disease has already run its course.
It is also worth noting that detectable antibodies against coronavirus usually diminish with time. There are reported cases of people who, after recovering from covid-19, tested positive again. Therefore, immunity from covid-19 by becoming naturally infected is not supported.
At best, what people can do is to abide by safety protocols to protect themselves from catching the disease or infecting others. It is recommended that those who develop mild symptoms of covid-19 be on home quarantine for 14 days. Hospital admission is needed for individuals suffering from severe symptoms such as difficulty of breathing.
