Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is an exotic fruit native to Southeast Asia that's best recognizable with it's red spiky exterior and it's juicy lychee-like interior. Though, those spikes are more of a hairy projection in that they don't actually pierce.
Let's delve into what makes rambutan both nutritious and delicious.
1. Vitamin C
A 100 grams serving of rambutan contains roughly 40 mg Vitamin C. Now, if you're on a 500 mg tablet Vitamin C supplement everyday, then the 40 mg content of rambutan may seem quite small, however, did you know that the recommended Vitamin C intake for adult is just 60 to 90 mg? This vitamin is essential for optimal immune system functioning, wound healing, and collagen production among other things.
2. Low in calories, Zero Saturated fats
1 cup rambutan (equivalent to 150 grams rambutan) contains roughly 100 calories. That's a perfect sweet treat especially when dieting as it's natural sugar content helps curb appetite while only loading the system with minimal energy. Moreover, this fruit has negligible fat content, with zero saturated fats and cholesterol.
3. Fiber
Fiber is essential for good digestion and prevention of constipation, and rambutan is amongst it’s good sources. Each 100 mg rambutan contains about 1.3 mg fiber.
4. Copper
Rambutan is a good source of copper, a vital mineral needed by the body to promote a healthy cardiovascular system, brain functioning, immunity, and collagen production among other things.
5. Low in Sodium
Rambutan is low in sodium since 1 cup rambutan contains only about 16 mg sodium. It is a fact that too much sodium in the body can in turn elevate blood pressure as it promotes water retention. Thus, making rambutan a far superior snack option than highly processed foods.
Furthermore, rambutan also contains traces of essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, manganese, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, zinc
