Tiger Balm Review

@healthbiztips by Arlene Gentallan | Product Review

Renowned for its strong kick that effectively eases body pain, Tiger Balm is an ointment that has been around for over a century, spreading relief in multiple countries across the globe.

I really like that it has such a powerful menthol scent, although if you're in public, there might be people out there who may find it bothersome to their nostrils.

Tiger Balm is considered a herbal remedy designed to alleviate aches, sore, insect bite, stuffy nose, among other things. It's  a staple in many homes whose use has been passed down through generations.

Red vs. White

Tiger balm has two variants:
  1. Red Ointment
  2. White Ointment

Formulation of Tiger Balm Red Ointment, each gram contains:
  • 110 mg Camphor
  • 100 mg Menthol
  • 70 mg Cajuput oil
  • 60 mg Dementholised mint oil
  • 50 mg Clove oil
  • 50 mg Cassia oil
  • q.s. (as much as sufficient) Paraffin & Petrolatum

Meanwhile, the White Ointment counterpart has this formulation for each gram:
  • 160 mg Dementholised mint oil
  • 130 mg Cajuput oil
  • 110 mg Camphor
  • 80 mg Menthol
  • 15 mg Clove oil
  • q.s. Paraffin & Petrolatum

As you can see, the red ointment has more menthol content while the white ointment has more dementholised mint oil. Meanwhile, they have identical camphor amounts.

The red ointment version is stronger than the white one, however, the downside is that it stains fabric. It's really hard to remove the stain and at times, impossible to completely rid off from the clothes. So, if ever you're not a fan of the stain, do your best to prevent contact with clothes or better yet, pick the white ointment.

The packaging

Tiger Balm is available in several sizes. It's 19 grams and 20 grams versions are available in hexagonal glass bottles. Nice, huh? There's also a pocket size version that's in a small tin container, a perfect travel mate. Like when you're in a bumpy ride,  you can sniff Tiger Balm to relieve that nauseous feeling.

How to use Tiger Balm

It's an ointment so you just get a desired amount with your fingertips and then apply over the area you want to soothe. Just apply a small amount first and wait for several seconds for the heat to take effect. You don't want to overapply or else you'll feel the area burn.

The ointment's heat usually lasts for several minutes so reapply as needed.

Burns the eyes!

Take note that this product is for external use only. If you accidentally brush it on your eyes, it'll be really painful. You might be tempted to wash off the ointment off your eyes with water but I warn you, if you do so, the pain will only intensify.

I've had several occasions wherein I've accidentally rubbed my eyes with my hands after applying Tiger Balm on my nose or back using that same hand, and it burned! So, what I do at such unfortunate occussions, I don't wash it off with water, I close my eyes and let several minutes pass. After several excruciating minutes, the burning sensation slowly fades. But, if  there is irritation or an untoward reaction, please don't hesitate to consult with your health care provider.

By the way, when temperature is hot, the semi solid consistency of the balm becomes liquidy. That's alright, it still does it work. Make sure to apply just enough though or it's gonna feel really hot indeed.
