Intense excruciating ''unwalkable pain'' in the affected joint is the most debilitating symptom of Gout.
There are lots of patients who report having experienced gout attack at night. It's onset is sudden that it's not uncommon for the person to be awakened in the middle of the night by an excruciating joint pain.
Signs and Symptoms of Gout
The affected area around the joint shows signs of inflammation, such as:- Pain
- Redness
- Warm to touch
- Tenderness
- Swollen
- The patient may also present with fever.
What is Gout Attack?
Gout attack is what we refer to when these signs of joint pain and inflammation becomes apparent. This is the acute episode of Gout. It is considered acute because these symptoms usually subside within one week even without treatment.
Recurring Gout Attack (early stage gout):
Gout Attack is recurring. That means there's a period of latency inbetween attacks. In this latency period, the person may suffer from minor joint and muscle discomfort in which the joint pain becomes tolerable or totally disappears. After months, another Gout Attack may occur.
WARNING: Permanent damage to joint leading to chronic pain and restriction of movement can occur with repeated Gout Attack.
What is the most commonly affected joint by Gout:
Gout most commonly affects the base of the Big Toe (metatarsophalangeal joint), however it can occur in other joints of the body, such as:
- Wrist
- Fingers
- Elbow
- Knees
- Heels
How many joints are involved with Gout?
Initial gout attack usually involve one joint, however as the condition worsens over the couse of time, several joints may be involved.
Note: One or multiple joint can be affected. It's not uncommon for only one joint to be affected on Gout's early stage.
