What is the purpose of menstruation?

        Menstruation is the periodic shedding of the inner lining (endometrium) of a woman's uterus. The purpose of menstruation is to prepare the the womb for future pregnancy. Menstrual cycle facilitates the uterus endometrium's thickening and sloughing.

        The hormone estrogen is responsible for thickening the inner lining of the uterus. If a women gets pregnant, progesterone will also increase to maintain the inner lining of the uterus. If a woman does not become pregnant, estrogen and progesterone level drops, the inner lining sloughs as menses.
