Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a native flowering tree of tropical countries Philippines and India where, since ancient times, it serves traditional medicinal purposes. Various parts of the tree can be used such as it's leaves, flower, fruit, bark, and roots.
1. Diabetes
Banaba helps people suffering from diabetes by promoting glucose transport into cells thus lowering blood sugar level. It's insulin-like property is attributed to it's corosolic acid content.
2. Weight loss & Obesity
Consuming banaba promotes weight loss and prevents cravings. It decreases the carbohydrate absorption and reduces appetite.
3. Lowers high blood pressure
The result of research conducted at Mukogawa Women's University (Nishinomoya, Japan) shows that after 10 week of banaba therapy, blood pressure of participants decreases while their fat metabolism became normal.
4. Lowers bad cholesterol

Insulin is needed to transport glucose (the main energy source) into a cell. People with diabetes may have deficient insulin or tolerance to insulin, so instead of glucose entering their cell, they flood the blood stream. As a result, they have high blood sugar level.

How to make a banaba tea?
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped banaba leaves / bark / roots / flowers
- 1 cup boiling water
Instruction:
- Put 1 tbsp of banaba part in a cup
- Pour 1 cup boiling water
- Steep for 10-15 minutes
- Enjoy!
