Can smart watches measure blood pressure?

Yes, there are available smart watches or fitness trackers that have ability to read a person's blood pressure. Advancement in technology has indeed gone a long way, but take note that not all smart watches has the functionality to measure blood pressure.

There are several brands of smart watches capable of measuring blood pressure, heart rate, and other health parameters, such as the Omron Heart Guide which is reportedly clinically accurate and has FDA approval, although it is quite big and pricey. It uses oscillatory technology to get blood pressure measurement, which by the way, is the same principle utilized in traditional BP cuffs.

On the other hand, other fitness trackers such as the ASUS Vivowatch BP uses sensors whereas Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 interprets pulse wave to measure blood pressure.

Since the wearer simply has to wear the smart watch on the wrist, it offers great convenience and portability, although there is an issue when it comes to accuracy.

As opposed to the gold standard for measuring blood pressure, which is through the use of a sphygmomanometer--the device with an inflatable cuff placed around the upper arm, smart watches with the built-in ability to take blood pressure reading offers the following convenience:

  • Portability. One can carry a fitness tracker with relative ease and comfort.
  • Easy to use. If you've been accustomed to using modern devices, then it would not be hard to learn to use a smart watch.
  • Don't miss. A wearable blood pressure smart watch is a convenient way to keep track of blood pressure when you're on the go.
