What comes to your mind when you hear the word "rice"? Food? How about a flawless skin? It certainly doesn't sound like something you'd put on your face for anti-aging purpose, but don't underestimate the potential of this grain. Did you know that rice water does a lot of perks for your skin:

Rice is a grain that's a staple food in many Asian countries. It's influence has graced the modern  western civilization, yet it's application in skin care is not as popular. The water used to clean rice is traditionally used in Asian countries like Japan and China, not just for the face, but for the entire body...including the hair!


How to make rice water?

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup rice grain (uncooked)
  • 1 cup water

Instruction:
  1. There's a wide variety of rice grain to choose from. It's your call.
  2. Rinse 1/4 cup of uncooked rice with 1 cup of water to remove impurities. Drain the water off.
  3. In a clean container, stir 1/4 cup of uncooked rice gains in 1 cup water. Another way to mix it to put it into a clean sealed container then shake it.
  4. Drain the rice water in a clean container. It's ready for use.


How to make fermented rice water?

Fermented rice water is more potent than typical rice water.

Simply follow the instructions above, but instead of using the rice water right away, you'll have to leave it at room temperature for about 1 to 2 days until it turns sour.

It is alright to leave the rice grain soaked in the water during the fermenting process. It will actually make the process faster.


How to use rice water for skin care?

Facial cleanser

Using a cottonball or your fingertips, dab a desired amount on your face. Leave it for 15 minutes before rinsing off with clean water.


Bath water

After you rinse off the soap from your body, add this extra step. Scrub rice water into your entire body using either your bare hand or a sponge. Let it stay for a couple of minutes before rinsing off with water.


Hair treatment

Another amazing thing about rice water is that it's use is not just limited to the skin, but it also has wondrous effect to the hair. Rice water makes hair strong, and lustrous. The Yao ethnic women from the Huangluo village in China, which holds the Guinness Book of World Records as the "World's longest hair village", are living testimony that using fermented rice water as hair cleanser makes a strong, long, and vibrant hair. Rice water actually delays the greying of hair.


What's in rice water?

Rice water contains inositol, a compound known for it's antioxidant effect. Inositol can penetrate damaged hair and skin to rejuvinate and protect from further damage.
