A study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that when your attention is drawn away while eating, you tend to eat 50% more calories. Now, that's something you can't ignore.

When you eat while you are distracted, you loose track of the amount of food you have already taken in. You just wolf down the entire meal. You know, it's a terrible habit to eat for the sake of chewing absent-mindedly. If you stick to this practice, you wouldn't even realize the cue that you are already full. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to send signal telling that you are already full. Your satisfaction of the meal is also neglected so you'll have this feeling of deprivation as you go by your day which can eventually turn into a craving.

It's not just about realizing that you are eating. It's focusing at the entire food experience, thereby, enjoying it.

2. As much as possible, eliminate distractions while eating. Turn off the television. Pause the movie. Just stop whatever you are doing and focus on your meal.

3. Are you living a hectic life? You may want to slow down and rethink your priorities. If you can allot even 20 minutes of your time to eat a meal mindfully, that'll be a good investment.

4. Slow down. It takes your brain 20 minutes to realize that you are already full. Take smaller bites at a time. Chew your food thoroughly.

5. Eat silently. This might sound hard if you're eating with your friends or family, especially with that much conversation. But, allotting at least one of your mealtime to do this lone practice will be a good starting point.
