Diarrhea, characterized by increased in frequency or loose bowel movement in cats can be a symptom of an underlying health problem such is the case with bacterial, viral, or fungal infection, gastrointestinal inflammation, or its current diet. For instance, did you know that cats tend to have diarrhea when given milk meant for human consumption, which is why if you like to give you cat milk, better purchase a milk specially formulated for cats.

There are ways to manage your feline's diarrhea at home but do remember that the tips here are in no way constitute medical advice and that you should still consult with a veterinarian.

1. Give you cat nothing but water for a day

It might seem counterintuitive to stop giving your cat food when it can be loosing electrolytes and mineral due to diarrhea. At this point, we are still figuring out what is actually causing the loose bowel movement and have the cat eliminate that from its system instead giving it more of that offending agent.

The cat is then slowly progressed into a diet of fat-free chicken broth and rice or pasta without the inclusion of spices to prevent stomach upset.


2. Practice hygiene and isolation

Your cat may have diarrhea because of infection so it is necessary to practice proper care when handling it to prevent other pets or fellow humans from getting infected.

Your diseased cat should have a separate drinking and eating bowl to prevent cross infection. Sleeping area and litter box should also be segregated.


Consult a Veterinarian
If your feline gets no relief from diarrhea and home remedies do not work, it is imperative to consult a veterenarian to manage the condition. It is imperative to do so right away and not mange the cat with home remedies especially when it is already showing signs of dehydration and weakness.

Infection which can be treated with antibiotics, dehydration which request intravenous fluid, parasitic infection treated with deworming are amongst those best managed in an accredited veterinary clinic.
