First and foremost, the answer whether or not a supply of tap water is safe for drinking varies by locality. This is because each municipality has their own filtration system and potential environmental contaminants that can get into the water as it runs into the pipes towards residential homes and buildings.

In certain places, the quality of tap water is strictly regulated and has to pass certain standards, although there are those areas that unfortunately fell these quality tests. Furthermore, environmental factors such as pollutants can affect the quality of the water as it is passes through the pipeline system.

So, a far better inquiry will be to look up the tap water quality of your given location.

There are areas where tap water is generally safe for drinking however there are also those that have significant amounts of contaminants, making it unfit for consumption.

Tap water of course comes at a cheaper price and without the microplastic particles that bottled water inevitably has. Still, many are wary of drinking it because of safety reasons, but this fear isn't completely unfounded. If you take a moment to search for "worst tap water" in the world, you'll see that there are geographical locations where their tap water is harmful to one's health.

Despite the fact that there is poor tap water in the world, that doesn't mean that drinking it should be avoided altogether except of course in certain areas where their tap water poses a serious health risk. After all, we do have to find a way to minimize our consumption of plastic bottles.

Besides, with the advent of various water filtration systems that can be directly installed in a home's faucet, consumers have the ability to purify their supply of tap water. Although, not all water filtration devices have an equal decontamination level so choosing the appropriate one is another matter.
