        Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a native flowering tree of tropical countries Philippines and India where, since ancient times, it serves traditional medicinal purposes. Various parts of the tree can be used such as it's leaves, flower, fruit, bark, and roots.



1. Diabetes
        Banaba helps people suffering from diabetes by promoting glucose transport into cells thus lowering blood sugar level. It's insulin-like property is attributed to it's corosolic acid content.


        Insulin is needed to transport glucose (the main energy source) into a cell. People with diabetes may have deficient insulin or tolerance to insulin, so instead of glucose entering their cell, they flood the blood stream. As a result, they have high blood sugar level.


2. Weight loss & Obesity
        Consuming banaba promotes weight loss and prevents cravings. It decreases the carbohydrate absorption and reduces appetite. 



3. Lowers high blood pressure
        The result of research conducted at Mukogawa Women's University (Nishinomoya, Japan) shows that after 10 week of banaba therapy, blood pressure of participants decreases while their fat metabolism became normal.



4. Lowers bad cholesterol
        Studies has shown that banaba prevents the accumulatin of bad cholesterol in the blood.



5. Anti-cancer and Antioxidant
        Corosolic acid has been shown to have anti-cancer property. It has been shown effective against cervical cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, and leukemia. A research done at Changhai Hospital in Shanghai shows that corosolic acid promotes the release of enzymes that kills human cervical cancer cells.



6. Natural Detoxifier
        Banaba helps flush toxins from the body which is beneficial to the kidneys and liver. It is a natural diuretic which removes excess water.



7. Good for your tummy
        Banaba bark and roots are use to treat gastrointestinal problems such as abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea. It also has laxative effect which helps cleans the bowel and colon.



8. Kidney problems
        Banaba bark and leaves has been use to treat kidney problems such as painful urination and kidney inflammation



9. Anti-microbial property
        Banaba has antibiotic, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties. The water in which it's fruits and roots had been boiled can be use for gargle to teat mouth ulcer. It can also be use to lower fever.



How to make a banaba tea?

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped banaba leaves / bark / roots / flowers
  • 1 cup boiling water


Instruction:

  1. Put 1 tbsp of banaba part in a cup
  2. Pour 1 cup boiling water
  3. Steep for 10-15 minutes
  4. Enjoy!
