There are two types of inflammation--acute and chronic.
Acute inflammation is short term inflammation that causes symptoms of redness, swelling, and pain. Acute inflammation usually lasts from a couple of hours to several days or weeks. On the other hand, chronic inflammation can last for several months to years.
Chronic inflammation jeopardizes the individual. In cases when there is no actual threat, but when inflammation runs havoc, it can turn against the body's own cells and tissues.
1. A bunch of Diseases
Chronic inflammation is a notorious culprit for the development of many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, periodontitis (inflammation of the gums) and autoimmune disease such as lupus and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease).
2. It makes it worse
Chronic inflammation can aggravate preexisting inflammatory diseases such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), asthma, and psoriasis.
3. Speeds up Aging
The negative effects of inflammation can show up in a person's appearance. Inflammation triggers cells to age faster leading to premature signs of aging such as wrinkles and crow's feet.
4. Break a bone
The bad effects of inflammation goes beyond skin deep, it can extend deep into the bones. Chronic inflammation messes up the healing process of bones. Not only that, it can also lead to demineralization and weakening, making them prone to fracture.
5. Fatigue
When your immune system is constantly on a "fight mode" which is the case when you have chronic inflammation, it can take it's toll on you, making you feel tired and fatigue. Individuals with chronic inflammation may also experience difficulty sleeping.
