No wonder, artificial sweeteners has penetrated the food industry with it's sweet "artificial" appeal. These man-made sugar substitutes are sweeter than your typical table sugar, with zero calorie. No wonder they've gained popularity among people who want to loose weight and diabetics.

Although artificial sweeteners approved by FDA are considered safe, they are hot topic of controversy.

Liver Damage and Cancer

A study in rats shows that consumption of aspartame and saccharin has toxic effects to the liver and a likelihood of liver cancer associated with it's long-term use. If you already have a per-existing liver disease, then taking artificial is not a wise move. Saccharin has also been linked to bladder cancer.

Weight gain

Artificial sweeteners contains no calories but studies shows that it can lead to weight gain. Since artificial sweeteners does not result in rise of blood sugar, the body does not recognize that it as food, so instead, it triggers a hunger response to which our body will respond by eating more leading to weight gain.

While you may not be able to cut down on artificial sweeteners, it is vital that you know the safe amount you can take per day.
