1. Honey
First on our list of natural alternative home remedy for cough is honey. Studies show that it can both suppress and decrease the severity of cough.
 
How honey works for cough is by being a demulcent which forms a protective layer on the surface of mucous membrane of the mouth and throat. Thus, preventing irritation caused by relentless coughing.

Honey can be safely taken by children above one years of age. Take note that children below 1 years old are deterred from taking honey since there is risk of botulism.

Recommended intake of honey is one and half teaspoon prior to bedtime.

If that's too sweet for your liking, you might want to add honey to a glass of warm water instead. Not only does it have controlled level of sweetness, the warmth of the water will also deliver a relaxing sensation to your throat.



2. Salt and Water gargle
The cheap and effective salt water gargle helps reduce inflammation, as well as kill bacteria in the mouth. Furthermore, this gargle also reduces pain and swelling.

Mix a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water. Gargle for no less than 30 seconds.



3. Ginger
Did you know ginger contains natural cough suppressing compounds called "oleoresi" which is ideally taken by those with dry cough. Moreover, it also has anti-inflammatory property which helps reduce swelling and pain.

Make yourself a refreshing and calming cup of ginger tea to ease cough and sore throat.


4. Peppermint tea
With its' menthol content, a cup of peppermint tea brings a soothing cooling sensation to the throat to ease the pain and inflammation caused by uncontrolled coughing.


5. Oregano
As an all-rounder home treatment for upper respiratory problems such as cough, colds, and sore throat, oregano works because it has anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory capability.

It can be taken orally on it's concentrated juice form, although it does not taste nice. There are also oregano oils available on the market that can be used instead.


6. Hydrate and boost your immune system
Relentless cough can leave your throat dry and painful so make sure to stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids. In addition, make sure to keep your immune system at an optimal level by eating fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in Vitamin C and Zinc.
