Skin whitening and healing are among the best skincare benefits of lemon. Combine this with the fact this fruit is a kitchen staple, it's no surprise that it has a huge following in many beauty DIYs.
Here are some of the perks of lemon as a topical skincare mate:
1. Natural exfoliant to Lighten Dark spots and Pimple marks
Dark spots, dark elbow, and pimple marks are common cosmetic problems most people have. Here's when lemon exerts it's wonderful ability as it contains citric acid which acts as an exfoliant when applied on the skin. Thus, removing old and dead skin cells to pave way for new skin layers to dominate.
2. Removes black heads
Who doesn't hate black heads? It's those pesky tiny sebum blockage in the pores that's a hurdle to a perfect Korean glass skin. Here's where lemon's citric acid proves beneficial as it unplugs and tightens skin pores.
3. Prevents pimples
Certain strains of bacteria are responsible for those pesky acne and pimples, but lemon, because of its ability to kill germs, helps eradicate them from the surface of the skin, thus preventing breakouts.
3. Anti-inflammatory
The niacin content of lemon works wonders to alleviate skin redness and swelling which usually accompanies a breakout.
4. Boosts collagen production
Vitamin C is an antioxidant commonly found in lemon and other citrus fruits which hastens collagen production. Boosting collagen synthesis is essential since it is the protein that is responsible for keeping the face youthful and wrinkle-free.
Important reminder: Do note that topical lemon application is not without side effects. For a start, since lemon juice is quite acidic on the skin, there's a possibility that it will cause pain and tingling when applied directly so to avoid this, you can dilute it with water. In addition, never expose yourself directly to sunlight after applying lemon on your skin as it can lead to photodermatitis marked by redness and rashes.
