How much calories does a person actually burn when walking?
Calories burned when walking varies from one person to another because there are lots of factors that have to be put into consideration.
Factors like weight, distance, degree of inclination of surface (such us when walking uphill), the load you are carrying, and how fast you walk have an impact to the amount of calories you burn.
According to The Walking Site, an average person takes about 2,000 footsteps to walk 1 mile which you'll complete in 30 minutes if you walk at the speed of 2 mph. By covering that distance, you're spending 100 calories.
Generally, the heavier a person's weight is, the more calorie is burned. For example, people with varying weight walking the same distance of 1 mile for 30 minutes have the following calorie consumption:
- If you weight 110 pounds (50 kg), you'll burn 59 calories.
- If you weight 132 pounds (60 kg), you'll burn 70 calories.
- If you weight 154 pounds (70 kg), you'll burn 82 calories.
- If you weight 176 pounds (80 kg), you'll burn 93 calories.
- If you weight 198 pounds (90 kg), you'll burn 105 calories.
How fast a person walks has an impact to the amount of calories burned, like on this case:
According to USDA, if you're a male weighting about 154 pounds (70 kg) and with a height of 5 foot and 10 inches, then you burn roughly 140 calories in 30 minutes when walking at 3.5 mph. If you increase the pace of your walk to 4.5 mph, then you burn 230 calories in 30 minutes.
If a person is walking up an inclined surface like when hiking up a mountain, more calories is burned. Also when the person is carrying a significant amount of additional weight like a backpack, then more calories is burned.
